Day 3 - Dance

The Creative Dancer

I am a dancer or maybe that should be I AM a dancer, The drive to dance runs through my waking hours and I travel far and wide to dance with partners of all ages and backgrounds, races and both genders. I have been dancing for 6 years now and have no inkling of how I got to a place where dance was an essential part of my life and no notion of whether there will ever be a day when I what to stop dancing.

Every dance is different - the creative possibilities are endless - the factors to vary are many and the emotional impact can be very different as a result or there can be no impact at all. Surprisingly issues such as light, room ambience, temperature and floor space can make a huge difference too. As we know from offices and homes: our space can make a huge difference to how we conduct our day to day business.

So with a bit of luck some of the dances I had between midnight and 5:30am on the first night of this dance weekend will have created something for my partner - I know some, indeed many, were memorable for me. And hopefully video evidence can be produced to demonstrate that - though it may appear on the edges of creativity to those who know the dance we are doing!

So is this my dose of creativity for day three of my thirty day odyssey - I hope it will do - but I have to confess I feel a little deficit in presenting it. It maybe because like taking photographs it is too easy, or because even if it is subjected to cameras from all angles the movement isn't properly captured, or perhaps it is the collaborative nature which makes me wonder if I can count it as MY creativity. I am A dancer amongst many but I always need another dancer to make my dance. So am I taking too much credit for the beautiful, exciting and thrilling dancing of others?

For now I will stick with the dancing I did as my entry for Day 3 even though it is Day 4 as I type. After four hours sleep I crave food and then more dancing, it is necessary and available. In short I am a DANCER and dancing is what I do.

  2. Yes I agree your dancing is so in the right space, moment, music, it lets your partner free so both are creating I love that you say you are a dancer. See you soon on a dance floor soon x

  3. C wrote "Dancing is about continuous creation. Still images render the motion immobile and so cannot do it creative justice. However, what these photos do is capture a random moment of pure joy at creating, spontaneously and without verbal communication, a work of art with another human being."

I responded: "I think the problem is I don't have to think about dancing much and all of the richness you describe comes subconciously - or not sometimes. Whereas I have to consciously think what I'm photographing and how, or which paints to use or what words to write.

C said: "Just because you're not conscious of the creativity at the time doesn't mean it's not there. The trouble with amateur artists is that we always compare ourselves with those who appear to do it more gracefully and effortlessly. Try comparing your style now and then to that of a genuinely average person!"
